Some of the research involves the use of various types of mattress to help individuals recover from a medical procedure or for some other debilitating disorder where a lot of time is spent in bed. Few studies have examined the variables that might make a mattress better for you. One study did measure some sleep variable such as body temperature, respirations, and body movements while subjects slept on different mattress types. They did find that quality mattresses tended to perform better than those of lesser quality in terms of their quantitative measures of sleep. These measures were correlated with subjects' self reported quality of sleep.

Sleep Tip

This suggestion really comes from hypnosis and meditation techniques. The reason it works is because both methods count on the factor of focus. When you focus on something soothing, and it distracts you from your current issues, helps lull you into the deep sleep you need. This means that your brain has to be put into a mode in order to start the sleep process.

Think of somewhere pleasant you would like to go to. Keep your eyes closed and the room quiet if you can. Even if you cannot have quiet, this will help. Pick a comfortable mental image of transportation for which you would like to travel and the destination. What you will do is think about getting into the train, plane, boat, and car. You have to think about every move you will make. For example, I am walking onto the train and I see passengers getting on with me. I can see the kind to train with the seats. I am looking for a place to sit on my way to Paris. I can everyone sitting down as I can hear the noise of the train engines gearing up to leave the train station. The train is slowing leaving the station and I can see out the window. Out of the window I can see people waving to the passengers.

Continue with this process in detail. Picture the scenery outside and great it looks. Think of the colors and pleasant sounds. See the mountains, lakes, ocean, forest, fields that look so blue or green or any visual sense. Continue this process on the way to your favorite place. You can imagine your favorite places and everything surrounding it. Visually see yourself entering different places that make you feel good. Continue to direct your thoughts to the positive.
